Video: Do Green Homes Save You Green?

How much money will I save buying an ‘energy efficient’ home?

Green arrows surrounding a home on a green background - green building, energy efficient, green home, eco friendly - Bill Salvatore, Arizona Elite Properties - 602-999-0952 - Arizona Real EstateSorry, I don’t think anyone can tell you that with any accuracy. The numbers I’ve seen among my client’s results are all over the map, and energy saving features range from a few appliances to every system in a whole house.

Green Homes seem to be taking way longer to catch on than most people, including me, had anticipated. After all, what could be the downside of saving energy, saving money and saving the planet all at the same time? The answer is simple really… cost. Green homes remain substantially more expensive than a standard new build home and green features are just “not there” yet. Like hybrid cars a decade ago, green energy elements need to show marked advancement before cost will meet convenience. And in an unfortunate twist of irony the folks who would benefit most from saving money on their utility bills can not often afford cost-saving or ‘green’ features.

Sounds counter-intuitive doesn’t it. It will cost you more money to save money. And I suppose in some cases it is. But if you intend to live in the home for an extended period of time the initial outlay will eventually pay for itself in lower energy bills. Plus you’ll reap the warm and fuzzy feeling of doing something positive for our future.

The growing popularity of living green and buying green may be two entirely different things.

Welcome to RIS Media News everyone, I’m Jenny Dunn.

A survey by the Whirlpool Corporation and Habitat for Humanity revealed that well over a half of middle and higher income respondents felt a green home would be affordable to live in and maintain, but only the higher income respondents were more likely to think that a green home would be affordable to actually build or buy.

Meanwhile, home builders and contractors were a bit more optimistic. Only 30 percent of builders surveyed said they thought green homes were too expensive for middle income families to buy.

Green homes offer a wide variety of benefits ranging from reducing carbon footprints to saving money on utility bills and even improving the health of children.

The majority of builders felt that living in a green home was affordable for even low income families, but for the same families to actually build or buy one was a different story.

From all of us at RIS Media, thanks for watching, we look forward to seeing you next time.
