In most parts of the country, this is the time of year when thoughts turn to curling up by a cozy fireplace with hot chocolate and a good book. Some homes are heated entirely through the use of a wood-burning contraption, for others it’s simply ambiance. But whatever the capacity of your fireplace or wood stove, there are some basic precautions your should take.

Note to Arizona Home Buyers: Arizona has strict regulations on wood burning and the use of fireplaces and wood stoves. Due to air quality concerns, you need to be aware and respectful of No-Burn days. If you’re looking to buy a home with a wood-burning fireplace you’ll need to purchase a resale home, as fireplaces in New Construction homes must have a permanently installed gas log. There are some exceptions for cooking, industrial and outdoor fireplaces. Maricopa County No Burn Days are listed here.

Welcome to Today’s Home Update, I’m Janna.

Home heating fires are the second leading cause of home fires. A chimney fire can occur without your knowledge due to creosote build-up high in the chimney. Some chimney fires can burn slowly at incredibly high temperatures and cause severe structural damage. Warning signs of a possible chimney fire include a loud crackle, pop or rumbling sound like a freight train, shooting flames or dark smoke billowing from the top of the chimney, and smoke inside the home along with an intense, strong smell.

The National Fire Protection Association advises taking several precautions to avoid chimney fires, such as burning only dry, well seasoned wood, and using only newspaper and kindling wood to start the fire.

Follow the manufactures recommendation carefully when using artificial logs and be sure to never use flammable liquids such as lighter fluid, kerosene, or gasoline to start a fire.

Of course always remember to supervise children around an open fire and never leave fire unattended.

Make sure there are working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in every bedroom and on each floor of the home.
