There are enough fantastic kitchen doodads out there to make most existing kitchens as user-friendly as brand new! Here are a few really useful additions.
Welcome to Today’s Home Update, I’m Julia.
Modern kitchens are generally built with space and convenience in mind, but if you’re living with an older kitchen there are easy additions that can maximize available space. Here are some suggestions from the Wall Street Journal’s Home and Living editors.
Consider a kitchen island which can double or triple both food preparation and storage space.
Or try a wall oven. It’s a lot easier to baste a turkey at eye-level, and there’s something to be said for that extra elbow room when you’re multitasking. Plus, a wall oven with two compartments gives you extra baking space or convection options.
Easy access to pantry items and pots and pans make food preparation easier and faster. Consider having lazy susans, pullout shelves, and other organizers built into your kitchen cabinets.
If cabinet space is an issue, think about wall mounted racks to keep your most-used pots and pans within easy reach.
Also, consider a large capacity, energy-efficient dishwasher to replace the one you have if it’s more than seven or eight years old.
Lastly take care of airborne contaminants and lingering cooking smells with a good ventilation system, even more important in a small space.
