In 1999, Congress declared the Month of May National Military Appreciation Month to honor the service and sacrifice of the members of our Armed Forces. Six branches are recognized throughout the month: Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard, and Space Force. Specific awareness is given to Loyalty Day (in recognition of the United State’ heritage of Freedom), VE Day (the end of World War II in Europe on May 8, 1945), Armed Forces Day, Military Spouses Day, and concludes with Memorial Day on the last Monday of the month.
Several additional National days and weeks of recognition fall in the month, making May the most opportune time to honor and thank all of our Heroes.

The nursing profession has been supported and promoted by the American Nurses Association (ANA) since 1896. After several date adjustments and hiccups in approvals, National Nurses week was assigned permanent dates in May. National Nurses week begins on the 6th and ends on Florence Nightingale’s birthday, May 12th. On May 8th we celebrate Student Nurses and as of 2003, School Nurses are honored on the Wednesday within National Nurses Week.
Firefighters Memorial Seattle
Proposed by an Australian firefighter and established in 1999 following the deaths of five Australian firefighters, we observe International Firefighters Day on May 4th, appreciating the service of all firefighters worldwide and remembering those who lost their lives during service.
National Police Week was established by Congress in 1961 beginning with
a single day, May 15th, to be declared Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week following as National Police Week. In 1994 an amendment directed the United States flag to be flown at half-staff on May 15th in honor of the day.
Last but by far not least, each year during the third full week in May, we observe National EMS Week and honor all the First Responders and Medical Professionals who dedicate their lives to saving our lives. 2024 is in fact, the 50th anniversary of National EMS week.
