When the last combat troops departed Vietnam on March 29, 1973, they arrived home to a puzzling reception.
Opinions had been mixed throughout the war and throughout the country. Inexplicably, our brave and dedicated military members bore backlash and honor in equal measure as they returned home. Because the logic behind the war had been controversial, people ridiculously blamed our service members. Many felt that they never received the respect they so rightfully deserved.
Vietnam Veterans Day commemorates the sacrifices of Vietnam veterans and their families and is part of a national effort to recognize the men and women who were denied a proper welcome upon returning home more than 40 years ago. The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act, signed into law in 2017, designates March 29 of each year as National Vietnam War Veterans Day. (courtesy of National Conference of State Legislatures)
Congress outlined a total of five objectives for The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration, with the primary objective being to thank and honor Vietnam veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the Nation, with distinct recognition of former prisoners of war and families of those still listed as missing in action. This Thank You Thursday, know that we respect, honor and appreciate you all- Vietnam Veterans and the families who supported you, and we thank you every day.
