No matter your region’s season of highest energy use, there are a few things including some routine home maintenance and repair, that everyone can do to cut energy costs in their home.
Changing out filters regularly in heating and cooling systems is one of the simplest and least expensive steps you can take right now.
Fix leaks. Use calking and weather-stripping to seal cracks and crevices where heat or air conditioning is escaping to the outdoors.
Proper use of ceiling fans. The direction your ceiling fan is rotating makes a difference. As heat naturally rises, ceiling fans should be set to move air down from the ceiling in months you are using your heating system, and up toward the ceiling in months that the air conditioner is running.
Consider using smaller appliances when possible like a toaster oven or outdoor grill rather than the kitchen range.
Switch to Energy Star rated appliances. The price difference of energy-efficient appliances can quickly be recouped by the monthly operational savings.

Welcome to Today’s Home Update, I’m John.
As the weather gets brisker, now is the perfect time to assess ways to better manage our energy use. According to EverSource, here are three of the biggest factors that are silently wasting energy around the house.
First, most modern appliances from your microwave and tv to your computer and game consoles, continue to draw power from electrical outlets even when you turn them off. According to EverSource you can save up to $150 a year by simply unplugging such appliances when not in use.
Second, consider a smart thermostat. You can stay in better control of your home’s overall temperature with a smart, wifi thermostat. You’ll be able to access your thermostat controls right on your phone, and set the temperature to your liking for any time of day.
Third, wrap your water heater. EnergyStar.gov has identified water heaters as the second largest energy vampire in any home, and its usage tends to rise as you use more hot water in colder months. Make a difference by installing insulation around the tank and surrounding pipes. Reducing heat loss can save 7 to 16% in water heating costs per year.
