Do Veterans make the best Realtors?

Do Veterans make the best Realtors?

I’ve always thought so.

In a recent article written by Forbes leadership and management contributor Kate Cooper, it was noted that Military Veterans develop valuable skills while serving, and in spite of their extensive training in areas such as project management, teamwork and leadership, many Veterans struggle to find fulfilling employment after leaving the service.

As I’ve learned first-hand, a military career and that of a Realtor demand a great many of the same competencies; organization and accuracy, perseverance, adaptability, adherence to guidelines, knowledge of and respect for the law, and include intangible but vital traits like honor, confidentiality, empathy, and integrity. The Forbes post points out that personal training and career development is a constant element in the life of military personnel… ditto Realtors. The Institute of Leadership and Management indicates in their downloadable report that Veterans possess unique skills that are readily transferable to business.

The reason more Veterans do not investigate the Real Estate profession is unclear. It is an unconventional career path to be sure, in that you are essentially an entrepreneur or more to the point, self-employed. This results in a measure of uncertainty but that is far outweighed by the freedom to work when, where and how much you want. Becoming a Real Estate agent is bit outside the box, but unlike nearly every box in the jobs market, your lifestyle is of your own making and income is limited only by yourself.

I would encourage more Veterans to consider looking at Real Estate as a business opportunity. Start by checking into your state’s education and licensing obligations. Familiarize yourself with start-up costs (in my humble opinion they are minimal) by speaking with local Real Estate brokers and owners.
