Welcome to Today’s Home Update, I’m Julia.

Before embarking on your next home improvement project make sure
you’re clear on the rules regarding building permits.

According to the National Association of the Remodeling Industry,
NARI, although building codes vary from state to state, a permit is
generally required for remodeling projects that involve changes
to the building’s existing footprint, electrical system, or plumbing.

Adding new windows to existing walls, usually requires a permit as well.

In fact you’ll most likely need a permit for any project that goes beyond
a simple repair or esthetic upgrade, such as adding supporting walls or
taking down load bearing walls. Adding an inground concrete pool,
or a porch or deck. Replacing the roof, a backyard shed, or concrete sidewalks.
driveways and slabs.

According to remodeling experts, permissions ensure that city officials
inspect the work completed at different stages, to make sure it complies
with current Safety and Health Building Codes.

More importantly, permits protect the investment you’re making to improve
your property.

Remember, permits need to be secured before the project gets underway,
otherwise work could be stopped until they are obtained.
