Thank You Thursday honors Veterans Furniture Center
There are upwards of 37,000 homeless Veterans in the United States. Though admittedly the numbers are slowly declining each year, there were nearly 1000 Veterans living on the streets of Phoenix, Arizona in 2017.
Did You Know: When the VA grants a housing voucher to a homeless Vet, there are no additional funds available to furnish or outfit the rental unit, often leaving the Veteran with no bed to sleep on and no means to prepare a simple meal. The upshot is that a great number of these Veterans, who are among our most vulnerable citizens, return to the streets.
Veterans Furniture Center is working to change all that.
I recently learned about this wonderful, thoughtful organization via a local news segment. I replayed it twice to be sure I’d heard it right, then immediately visited their website. I was thoroughly impressed!
Since 2009, Veterans Furniture Center has been providing household necessities to homeless Veterans transitioning into permanent housing. According to the statement on their website, their mission is: “To assist the neediest, formerly homeless veterans to transition to permanent housing by providing them, free of charge, the furniture and household goods they need to start a new life. When we deliver furniture and household goods, we make their apartment into a home, giving the veteran, who previously has had nothing, a sense of self-worth and hope for the future.”
Veterans Furniture Center is a local non-profit based in Phoenix, AZ, and staffed solely by volunteers and an unpaid board of directors. Their goal is to provide Veterans who have been granted a housing voucher by the VA, with the all staples of a functional home: “We strive to provide each of our formerly homeless veterans with exactly the complement of furniture and household goods they need to successfully transition from homelessness to a productive life.” You can read the stories of two of the Veterans they’ve supported here.
The Veterans Furniture Center website is fascinating.
A few facts from the VFC website.
- VFC assisted 375 homeless Veterans’ transition to permanent housing in 2018, and helped over 2,700 Veterans in need since 2009.
- VFC is operated completely through donations and the cooperation of volunteers.
- VFC was awarded the GuideStar Award for Transparency in 2019.
- All of the Veterans assisted by VFC are referred through the VA.
- If you donate to VFC’s Support a Veteran Program, 100% of your donation will go to buy furniture and household goods for needy Veterans.
- I was pleasantly surprised to note that my favorite furniture store, Living Spaces, donates brand new beds for all of VFC’s needy Veterans.
- If you feel so inclined, you can donate in many different ways.
So today, we offer a heartfelt Thank You to Veterans Furniture Center, for the compasionate contribution of heart that they graciously add to Veteran’s homes.
