Video: Free Energy Audits, are they a Scam or a Steal?

Things are heating up here and this is the time of year when Arizona home owners need to beware those calls, emails and knocks on the door from vendors offering you a Free Energy Audit. It’s worth doing your homework, as the video below will warn you. I think the most important piece of information I can relay to you is this: Neither your utility company or the government will ever show up to do an Energy Audit unless you have made an appointment with them! Anyone else is a marketer of some sort and ‘free’ will very likely not mean free.

For your convenience we’ve provided a transcript directly below this video.

Video Transcript: Free Energy Audits, are they a Scam or a Steal?

Welcome to Today’s Home Update, I’m Dynell.

Are you looking for ways to reduce your energy expenses? As concerned as you may be, don’t accept a free energy audit, often perpetrated by scammers hoping to make off with thousands of dollars.

According to the Better Business Bureau, do the following to avoid becoming the victim of an energy audit scam.

Never allow anyone into your home who claims to be from the utility company or the government unless you requested the visit.

Ask the person for identification. Inspect their identification card thoroughly and compare it to the identity labeled on their uniform.

Listen for ‘Red Flag’ words such as “prepaid debit card” or “wire transfer”. These are telltale signs of a scam.

Keep your cool. If you suspect a scam, remain calm. If the fraudster is pressuring you for information or payment, call your utility company, use the number on your bill to verify.

Use common sense. Some scammers may seek payment to repair or replace your electrical meter. The meter on your home is the property of the utility company and it is never your responsibility to maintain, repair, or replace it.

Thanks for watching Today’s Home Update, see you next time.
