I have a few Google alerts set up to stay informed about Veteran related matters throughout the country. One of these searches is focused on Arizona Vets. More often than not the Navajo-Hopi Observer pops up in my results.
The Navajo-Hopi Observer is a relatively small newspaper, but clearly one with a big heart. They cover the sizable Navajo and Hopi Nations in Northern Arizona as well as Winslow, a modest, quirky little town in the high desert area. I have to admit, the Observer wasn’t even on my radar until I began researching Veteran’s issues several years ago. Since then I purposely seek out the Observer’s online articles for their refreshing personality, local character, and of course their advocacy for Veterans.
We’ve re-posted an Observer article here in the past, but it was one I read last night that prompted this Thank You Thursday mention. The headline read Veterans at risk, but not forgotten and it referenced a Stand Down event taking place in Flagstaff, AZ later this month. As usual it was a well written piece, and also consistent with the flavor of the Observer, the story went well beyond dates and times as it touched on the background and personal side of the event; the creator, volunteers and local participants. You can read the complete article here.
To the Navajo-Hopi Observer on this Thank You Thursday – we appreciate your frequent coverage and support of Veterans, for caring about the human element and for reporting on the day-to-day lives, struggles and triumphs of real people. In a world where newspapers must work longer and harder than ever just to maintain their existence, we thank you for your service.
