By Allison Hurtado, Ahwatukee Foothills News | Posted: Friday, September 19U.S. Rep. Kyrsten Sinema has released a comprehensive resource guide for veterans in her district just as this week she met with Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert McDonald to get an update on when care for veterans will be improving in Phoenix.
The resource guide is being distributed through local community organizations and is also available online at sinema.house.gov. It’s 27 pages long and includes information on insurance, education benefits, job training and military records.
“After listening to veterans in our district and working with them for so many months, we found that many veterans were unaware or didn’t have access to all the community resources that are available to them,” Sinema said. “This resource guide gives clear and detailed information about all the resources available to them. … The goal here is to help veterans realize and access the resources available to them while simultaneously working to ensure that the VA does a better job of meeting the needs of veterans in Arizona.”
Sinema met with McDonald this week to stress the importance of results in Phoenix. She said she asked about the implementation of the law Congress passed in July, a new 300,000-square-foot clinic coming to Phoenix, the hiring of more staff, the firing of bad managers and the hiring of a new permanent director. She said she didn’t get many good answers.
McDonald said he cannot legally hire a new director until the current one is let go. It was unclear how quickly that might happen, especially if the individuals fired appeal the decision. The timeline and location for the new clinic is also still unclear. Sinema is encouraging the VA to renovate an older building to get it up and working in three to six months. One-hundred-sixty-four employees were hired, but Sinema said 840 are still needed.
Sinema has been criticized by her opponent, Republican Wendy Rogers, for not doing enough to deal with the VA scandal. Sinema said veterans issues have been a focus for her office from the beginning and she was lied to about the problems at the VA. She has listed on her website all the steps she has taken to fix the problems with the VA.
