I am a sucker for nostalgia… baseball cards, penny candy, drive-in movie theaters. It doesn’t always work out, you know, the whole “you can’t go home again” thing. But every once in a while something feels or tastes or sounds exactly the way you remember. (think Bullseyes) When that happens it can make your life flash before your eyes.
A few years ago I decided I couldn’t live without seeing Queen play in Phoenix. I could have lived without it. Freddie Mercury had been gone for quite some time and never did they have any kind of success replacing him. And honestly, I should have known. No one on else earth has that flawless Freddie Mercury sound. His range was nothing less than amazing and I know now, irreplaceable. The concert was not exactly disastrous but neither was it Queen. Fond memories trampled.
I’ve been considering giving this thing another try. Not Queen for sure, never that again. But maybe I could just test the waters of nostalgia once more.
When our daughter was very small she had a thing, and I mean a BIG thing, for Air Supply. My wife and I took her to a concert and out to dinner afterward. She talked non-stop about it for months. I was the best Dad E-V-E-R and that was the best $100 bucks I ever spent (I’m not kidding, it might even have been less) Our daughter is almost 40 now and probably couldn’t identify Air Supply if she fell over them in an otherwise empty alleyway. I on the other hand, am a fan to this day. I don’t even know whether or not they’ve put out anything new lately. I just still love their old stuff.
Air Supply is playing here at a local casino tonight. I’ve only got a couple hours to decide whether It’s possible to get that “best Dad EVER” feeling back or if this is destined to be Queen all over again. Maybe I’ve learned my lesson, I’m headed out to the corner store. They have Bullseyes there and candy never disappoints.
I guess it’s always hard to beat the original, because our memories can often play games with just how wonderful it was. But you are definitely NOT joking about the range of Freddie Mercury’s voice! (4 octaves) I keep a recording of the old Queen, (1981 from TV network Palladia, Montreal Forum),complete with Freddie, on my DVR.
