Last week I read an article on AZ Big Media that put Gilbert, Arizona in the top 10 cities to buy an affordable home. As a Realtor and a long time Gilbert resident, this was news to me, until I read the criteria. I was also surprised to learn that our next door neighbor Chandler made the top 10 as well. Affordable was not exactly the label I would have applied to either city, but the metrics used for comparison make the choices totally understandable.
The analysis conducted by SmartAsset examined the 100 largest cities in the U.S. Large cities tend to have smaller housing units priced at a premium. Considerations in the study included among other factors; homes with two or more bedrooms, housing costs in relation to income, education, and crime rates.
The Gilbert lifestyle doesn’t present like a large city. The general experience is more akin to a suburban bedroom community, but with every convenience hyper-local. Within its population of approximately 227,000, Gilbert’s demographic medians tend to be; age 33, married 60%, families with children 55%. 73% of housing is owner occupied with household median income of around $97,000. According to the city’s official website, Gilbert was recently named the most prosperous large city in the nation by Economic Innovation Group. I can personally attest to Gilbert being a great place to live!
