Infographic – Making the Big Move: Get Help or Go it Alone?
When we moved across country we had some help. Indeed, we undertook almost none of it on our own. Movers packed all but the most personal or delicate items, loaded it all on a truck, stored it until we were prepared, unloaded, unpacked and placed nearly everything we owned in its new home. Shippers collected, secured and transported our cars, and we arrived at the airport weighed down by nothing but a suitcase. It was a curious and freeing experience after having carried out several previous major moves with our own two hands. We were, at the time, totally oblivious of the cost of this advantage. It was a corporate transfer and was completely organized by someone else. It wasn’t until tax time that we discovered the actual value and the extent of services provided, the charges would have equaled nearly half of my yearly salary at the time.
The time and labor involved in moving an entire household on your own is almost overwhelming, but the cost to employ professionals can be a real shock to your finances. Nevertheless we all move. According to reference.com, the average American will move a total of 12 times in their lifetime. Damn, that means I’m doomed (of course I mean destined) to move 4 more times… probably should just start packing right now.
Prepping for a Move: Should You Hire a Pro or DIY?
By Zoe Eisenberg
Let’s face it: We all know moving is a pain. And according to the American Moving & Storage Association, the average move in the U.S. costs a shocking $5,630.
Of course, costs will vary greatly upon family size, house size and location. However, it’s safe to say that moving is often more expensive than expected. This brings many to the question: should you hire a pro mover, or enlist the help of a few friends and DIY?
To help you come to a conclusion about your move, New York-based Roadway Moving pulled together a list of the top moving costs, and a comparison of what you’ll spend if you do it yourself or hire out. Now keep in mind a moving company curated this breakdown, so it may be a teeny bit biased. Do your own research to determine what will be most cost-effective for you.
