Video: Advice for the Sandwich Generation
There’s lots of talk about Millennials moving back in with their parents, but more and more that scenario is being elaborated on. Senior citizens are moving in with their adult children, some who have kids of their own or those with Millennial ‘boarders’. That makes a lot of home owners members of the Sandwich Generation. The video below has some great advice on handling these blended family situations with grace.
If your extended family will be around for an extended stay, consider a home with in-law accommodations, a guest suite or a casita. These are becoming more popular every day and especially in New Construction homes. Home Buyers are planing way ahead for long-term house guests.

Welcome to Today’s Home Update, I’m Carrie.
Many people are now members of the “Sandwich Generation”. Working adults still caring for kids or college students who must still care for aging parents.
Lauren Hill, co-author of Lift Caregiving.com has some good advice for this group. According to Hill start by making time for yourself. It may fall to the bottom of your list as you struggle to find time and resources, but you need to relieve stress for exercise and plan an outing once a week.
Hill also stresses good communication. Share your struggles and goals with your spouse, siblings or other relatives. Even those living far away can share the care-giving burden. Don’t be shy about looking for and excepting help from others. And learn to say no to additional volunteer requests.
Hill suggests looking for supportive groups in your community. Your parents doctors may be a good source for finding local resources. Also enlist the help of other professionals, such as a Pharmacist for help with your parents medication. And a financial planner to help protect your family’s financial future.
Most of all, says Hill, allow room for mistakes when you or someone else looses it. Forgive yourself and others, and move on.
